So, here's some videos to help you polish your teamwork doing the Figure 8 using the Heeling Stick. You will note in the videos, I use the Heeling Stick at the shoulder, the left flank, the right flank and even use it with my right hand on the dogs right flank. At this point, using the Heeling Stick is no longer about being rigid in the mechanics. Remember, using the Heeling Stick on the dog is not used as a weapon or an applied punisher. Rather here, the use of the Heeling Stick in intended to be a guide for wherever the dog needs extra help to maintain correct Heel position.
And just like the LL work in Week 1, the turns taught Week 2-4, the winching in Week 5 for a lagging dog, the TC in Week 6 and the light lines in Week 7 - Week 10, in the dogs mind it's the principle that 'something MAY be there every time it is out of heel position' that trains the dog to pay attention by choosing to be IN correct heel position. It is the dogs BELIEF the 'something MAY be there every time it is out of heel position' that causes the dog to choose correct Heel position. In time, the Heeling Stick use is fazed out.
Just like Pree's response to coming when called at 3:45 am in the morning, it was her BELIEF that brought her back to me, not any tool I had on her because I had NO way to get her to return other than her BELIEF that I COULD reach out and help her return when called.
By the time you get to this Retrieve Course, you are moving way past the mere KMODT mechanics, you are being thoroughly exposed into a new mindset of thinking differently about training your dog. You should now recognize that I'm training you to shift your mental perspective from sheer mechanics to mechanics + observation + thought process + understanding = solutions.
1) To be an acceptable Koehler student is to learn the basic mechanics, but that only takes you so far.
2) To be a good Koehler student is to acquire/assimilate the basic mechanics into your hands, heart and body so it is automatic.
3) To be a great Koehler student is to learn/acquire/assimilate not only the basic mechanics, but TO THINK KMODT processing of Sequencing, Timing, Mechanics, Repetitions,
4) To be a KMODT trainer of others is to have # 1-3 above, to care deeply that your students succeed with their dog, and to know how to shift yourself to get inside someone else's mind, coach them past where they are stuck, and get them to experience KMODT success with their dog.
Because once a student experiences KMODT success, they will stick with KMODT because they have worked through # 1, # 2 and become # 3. It's a process, that's for sure. All that being shared, part of the RC transformation for the owner(s) is their mental shifting of approaching KMODT from a new perspective.
And as each of you know, I see you not as you are, I see you as you CAN be with your dog and your life. So, my teacher's heart is seeing you as what you CAN be in future within KMODT. That is what motivates me to invest so much of me in each of you. I see what is possible in you and I work, coach, train, encourage, critique, provide endless pointers, and often pray for you/your dog so that your success can be achieved.
Several of these videos with titles of Slow Motion were filmed in slow motion, but while I can click on them and play in slow motion, I can't seem to save these videos in slow motion and embed in this Blog. So, if you want to watch in Slow Motion, and I recommend you do as you will see things clearly, then go that video and when it open us before you click the Play arrow, look on the bottom right side of the video screen. There is a small icon that looks like a flower, if you click on it, you can change the speed so you can view S..l..o..w...l..y. Worth doing so.
Leon and Ren..oh so very, very well done!
