Lesson 9: Marrying the Fetch to the HOLD. Boaz

Once the Stair EXAM Test is successful, it is time to marry the HOLD to the Fetch command.  Here is where working the dog against a stool or a step and lowering the DB towards the ground (not on the ground at this point) now makes sense.  You will be working with DB above, then on the stool so have those ready. Recommend you use a taller stool first, then a shorter stool, and then one nearly flat to the ground to help your dog understand the sequencing.

This is an old RC video, so skip the Place Stool/object totally. Once you've warmed up the dog with 1-2 retrieves, eye level, then head to the ground, then do retrieves at the 1-2" elevated ground surface.

  1. You can use a training table for this portion of the training.
  2. Have a taller place stool in front of the dog.
  3. Set the dog up (collar high and snug, etc) at a distance where they can reach DB extended over the place stool command "Fetch "and hold DB above the stool.
  4. As quick as the dog's mouth is on DB, command "HOLD" and give them the HOLD signal under their chin as you do the Turn. Use "Yes" to encourage your dog.
  5. As soon as the dog turns, while still standing...command "Give" and take DB.
  6. When the dog drops the DB (they all do), let it fall, give the HOLD correction, pick up DB and replace in dogs mouth with another "HOLD" command and continue.  Make sure your dog is in a Stand while moving with DB.
  7. Swing the dog and set them up again.
  8. Repeat until dog is comfortable working at that height.

Once the dog gains understanding, continue to lower the stool the dog is working against.

And then again, even lower.
