  1. What I find fascinating is that Master Sugar Bear was RIGHT THERE the whole time Ruth was doing this session. This IS a critical moment in the retrieve training process and the handler needs to be sure of what they must do, promptly, when their dog fails to retrieve on command without the Setup.

They ALL fail, they just do, and the handler MUST reestablish immediately that even without the Setup, the handler STILL will reach and ensure the dog obeys. The Double Ear Correction (DEC) begins at this point in the process. IF the handler is swift, immediate and thorough in their DEC, the dog then quickly realizes their handler WILL SURELY GET ON THEIR EAR(s) [oh my!!] and belief is reestablished.

*THE DOG'S BELIEF THEIR HANDLER WILL SURELY GET ON THEIR EAR(S) TO ENSURE PROMPT OBEDIENCE IS 95% OF THE RETRIEVE TRAINING.*

Today, I will attempt the Lesson 10 EXAM: The Chair Test with Ruth.

  2. And Sugar then simply ignores Ruth as she HAS learned and complied (because he was there to make sure she did as he was communicating with her the entire time). Sugar leaves her, Ruth watches, I turn off the camera and literally crack up laughing when I watch this video.

Dogs do learn my watching other dogs. Dogs do communicate to other dogs how they are to behave. A mature, well-trained dog like Sugar does much of the work for me in training younger dogs. Always, I am amazed at this process of canine education.
